ESCAPE ROOM TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS MOVIE
He was such a fresh and different approach to the kinds of people who serve as fodder in this kind of movie and I think he should have survived to the end instead of the girl who can’t feel pain.

It should have been Danny to come back and reveal that he has been doing this against his will, then the reveal can come later that it isn’t against his will at all.įinally I will point out that the priest character was great and I was gutted he died so soon. If they are going to still do this then bringing Amanda back has kind of spoiled the surprise that people didn’t actually die if you didn’t see them die. There are quite a few clues to it dotted around the first movie - too many to be coincidence. There was a huge fan theory that Danny, the first person to die in the last movie, was actually the puzzlemaker and was just in the game to make sure everyone knew the rules. While we’re on the subject of Amanda, I get they wanted to bring back Deborah Ann Woll but if they were bringing back a character from the first movie they brought back the wrong one.

The amount of plot holes in the film was a bit much as well, like what would they have done if Ben or Zoey died in one of the earlier rooms? What if one of the other girls had gotten in the taxi first? That would have really ruined the reveal of Amanda because whoever got through to the final room would have had no idea who she was. It would have set up nice character development for people and we could have even got flashbacks to their original games to see why they are so scared about these rooms - for instance take out Ben’s nightmare scene and instead have him in another crushing room. It would have been far greater if the rooms in the game were matched to individuals within the game like the first film had. This completely ruined the poetic irony that is rife in all kinds of horror films and is what makes most brutal death scenes satisfying. They also made a classic horror movie faux pas in that the game had nothing to do with the people within the movie and instead revolved around a character who was never seen on screen. Tournament Of Champions made this exact same mistake with the whole game being designed to isolate Zoey and Ben in order to pressure Zoey into either becoming the next puzzlemaker or getting on the plane. Everyone recognises that the worst bit about the Saw franchise is the unwinnable traps - it totally goes against everything the movies were about and sucks the tension and fun out of the scenes. They essentially broke their own rules in the second movie and didn’t learn from Saw’s mistakes. The film was decent but had the ability to be really good if they had just done things a little differently and that made it incredibly frustrating. However, Tournament of Champions was a miss for me. It hit a spot for me that not many movies other than the Saw franchise hit and I was certain this could be another great franchise, especially with its lower age rating. It was more enjoyable then Spiral and it did what it wanted to do, even if not perfectly. Does it have to actually move things along in the 3rd movie? Yes. Was it enjoyable enough that it gets a pass? Yes. Not much changes between the end of the first movie and the 2nd. While you still know the Endgame and that the movie will catch up on the kill count eventually it does add some tension.Īs someone alluded to the movie does spin its wheels.

One thing which is good is that you know most of the supporting characters are there to die in the rooms. I'm not 100% sure it makes sense as a viewer but it does in the movie universe I guess. The movie had another twist, before the before mentioned one, that was much more surprising. But it was not as tied into the plot as the one in Spiral so I don't think knowing it affects the movie. The movie had one really obvious, even more so the Spiral, twist. I know some people think Zoey solves everything herself, and maybe it's true to a point, but there is no way she could do those rooms without help so I think the games were group efforts.

IF they were actually champions I think there previous games would make good movies. The movie does a manageable job making the supporting characters interesting even though you get no backstory on them.
